Garth Maxwell, Business Development Associate

Legacy is proud to announce the recent appointment of Garth Maxwell as Legacy’s first Business Development Associate to partner with our increased marketing efforts and nurture existing and new business opportunities for Legacy.

Garth has over 30 years’ experience in financial services, most recently as the head of private banking at Danske bank. He brings a wealth of experience in Client and Business Development relationship management and will help Legacy maximise the opportunities we are seeing in the marketplace.

Professional Bio

Garth was educated in Bangor Grammar School and joined the Northern Bank straight from school after his A levels.

His early years were spent in Retail Banking, based in various branches in the North Down Area. He gained experience across all aspects of Personal and Business Banking and participated in the development of the Bank’s Personal Customer mortgage business.

In 1996 The National Australia Group (who then owned NB) introduced a tied Financial Services business, National Australia Life. Garth was a key member of the management team which helped this business grow considerably over the first number of years.

He was then tasked with introducing the sales skills acquired in this role into retail banking and took up his first branch managerial appointment in Donaghadee.

From there he was asked to take on an Operations Manager role for the entire Personal Banking business which included 101 branches across Northern Ireland.

Another opportunity for development came along when the national Australia Bank decided to invest huge sums of money to bring their newly acquired Investment business, MLC, into the UK.

Garth took on a Business Development Role within the group Wealth Management Function which in the first couple of years was involved with integrating MLC into the UK Financial Planning Business. This was followed by the sales of the Bank to Danske Bank and Garth was part of the management team which implemented the change of platforms for the financial advice business.

His last role was a Senior Management role as “Head Of Private Banking” for Danske Bank UK. In this role, he was responsible for a team of 40 Private Bankers who covered Northern Ireland and a further team in the London Branch that primarily looked after Danish Expats who had relocated to London.

Garth's interests outside Financial Services would include rugby and in his younger days played for a very successful Bangor Team through the ’80s and ’90s. He was also lucky enough to represent Ulster on numerous occasions and represented Ireland on their sevens team.

During the summer months, he has been a keen sailor enjoying cruising on the west coast of Scotland and also racing in his Laser dingy throughout Ireland and Europe. He is also a passionate golfer and when conditions allow, he also loves to head to Europe for snow skiing.

Garth is married to Paula and they live in Donaghadee close to the sea!
